Random Thursday

It’s Thursday. I’ve been working through the chapter quiz and reading more about the material, slowly making my way through it. Somehow the morning slipped away, and now it’s already past lunchtime. I still haven’t eaten yet, which is partly because I’m having trouble deciding what I want. I open the fridge, stare into it like it might reveal the meaning of life, and then close it again. Apparently, my stomach and my brain are not currently on speaking terms.

I also don’t know what I want to write about today. I feel like writing, like the urge is there, but the topic hasn’t shown up yet. It’s like having the feeling that you want to talk, but when someone asks, “About what?” your mind just goes blank. Sometimes writing works like that, though. You start with absolutely nothing, and then, somehow, a paragraph later, you’ve wandered into a thought you didn’t even know you had.

At least I do have a new book to poke around in. I borrowed Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham from the library on my Kindle. I was in the mood for something non-fiction, something a little lighter that still feels like you’re hearing someone tell stories. She discusses her time on Gilmore Girls and various other aspects of her career. I always like books like that because they feel less like “reading a book” and more like sitting across from someone while they tell you stories about their life.

Tommy and I also started watching a documentary about the Fukushima nuclear accident. It covers the earthquake and tsunami that hit Fukushima and the chain reaction of problems that followed at the nuclear plant. It’s fascinating. The scale of the disaster is hard to wrap your head around. A 9.0 earthquake, then a tsunami, and then the plant losing power and cooling systems. It’s one of those situations where you can see how many small failures are stacked on top of each other until everything spirals.

We didn’t finish the documentary yet, but what we’ve watched so far has been really interesting. It’s the kind of thing that makes you sit there thinking about how complicated these systems are and how much depends on things going exactly right.

So that’s my Thursday so far: studying, staring into the fridge without answers, wanting to write but not knowing about what, starting a new book, and thinking about the documentary that we still need to finish.

Maybe after I eat something, one of those thoughts will decide to turn into something worth writing about.

I made Tommy’s lunch for tomorrow ahead of time, which means I won’t have to rush around the kitchen tonight to make it before I go to bed. Now I’m planning to read a little more of the chapter I’ve been studying and then maybe watch some YouTube while I wait for Kel to come home.

The kids decided to order wings from Wingstop tonight. Alexis and Karissa paid for it themselves, which was nice of them, and Kel is going to stop and pick it up on the way home. I’m only planning on having three or four wings. For some reason, I’m just not really in the mood for wings tonight. They sound fine in theory, but in practice, I feel like a few will probably be enough.

Tommy has band practice this evening, so I’m not entirely sure where or when he’ll end up having dinner. Band nights always make the schedule a little unpredictable.

I’m also thinking I might spend some time reading on my Kindle tonight. Well, after I eat my wings, so my hands aren’t all greasy.

Right in the middle of all this, my UPS, my uninterrupted power supply, decided to beep and shut itself off. Apparently, there must have been a quick power glitch, but it happened so fast I didn’t even notice the lights flicker. The UPS noticed, though. It took my computer a minute to cooperate and turn back on afterward, which is always slightly nerve-wracking, but thankfully, everything came back up normally.

Time for a little break, matcha tea in hand and a bit of YouTube. Before I get too comfortable, though, I should probably fill out my planner as well. I was supposed to fill out my planner this morning.
