This morning was spent taking Alexis to her dentist appointment. Beforehand, we stopped at our local coffee shop, where she got a coffee and a pastry. She didn’t eat the pastry since she had a dental appointment, but she sipped a little of her coffee. Kel, Alexis, and I then headed to the next town for her appointment. While she was with the dentist, Kel and I visited her dad’s house, as he lives nearby. I thought Lexi was getting a cleaning, which usually takes close to an hour, so I was surprised when she texted after only half an hour, saying she was done. That’s when I remembered it was just an exam since she hadn’t been in for a while. We headed back to the office to pick her up.
Oh! I should mention—I owed Lexi a coffee. I had accidentally spilled hers earlier, so I promised to buy her another. After her appointment, we swung back to the coffee shop so I could make good on that promise. Once we got home, Kel left with Mimi for a grooming appointment in the city, while I stayed behind to work on some coding. I can hear Alexis and Karissa laughing in their room as I work.
Alex had job training today, but he backed out. He didn’t like the company’s marketing strategy, said it felt sketchy, and wasn’t convinced about the knives he’d be expected to sell.
On another note, my bread came out really good! The only issue is cutting through the bottom of the loaf. It isn’t tough, but the knife seems to wrestle with it. I looked it up, and apparently, it could just be the knife. I also read that when I lower the oven temperature after removing the lid from the Dutch oven, I should probably take the bread out until the oven cools to the right temperature—otherwise, it’s still too hot. Adding a bowl of water for extra steam might help, too. This was only my second loaf, so I’m learning as I go, but the taste and texture turned out great.
Kel and I are also trying to figure out where to stash my desk stuff so we can decorate the table for fall. I might use a tote in the meantime while I wait for my new desk, but then… where do we put the tote? Maybe behind the table? I just want to get things organized—having piles sitting around really irks me.
Another library hold came through, which I’ve already downloaded to my Kindle. Now I need to hurry and finish Wordslut before diving into my next read, Great Big Beautiful Life. I think it’s a romance, though I’m not entirely sure yet. It’s been getting a lot of hype, and since I already enjoy this author’s work, I’m hoping it lives up to the buzz.
Mimi had some matted fur under her chin, which the groomers were able to take care of. However, they discovered an open wound in that area, so they couldn’t finish her grooming. They also mentioned that she has a skin condition, which we already knew, since she’s always had dry, flaky skin. Now we just need to focus on treating that.
Oh shoot, I still need to make brown rice for Tommy’s lunch tomorrow. I really don’t want to be up until 11 again cooking rice—last night I was already up that late making his lunch. Hopefully, I can get to bed a little earlier tonight.
Mimi’s home. She seems pretty happy. Kel went to drop off some Jersey Mike’s subs at her dad’s place. I just started a pot of brown rice—it’ll be a few hours before it’s ready. I still don’t understand why brown rice takes so long to cook. Ok, I looked it up. Brown rice takes longer to cook than white rice because it is a whole grain that retains its fibrous outer bran layer and germ, which acts as a barrier, slowing water penetration into the grain’s starchy endosperm. White rice, in contrast, has these layers removed during processing, leaving only the endosperm, which softens more quickly with heat and water.
I’m going to see if I can finish my current book so I can start the new one. I’d like to change the layout of my site. And I’m thinking of adding tags so the posts can be easily searched on the site. I have a layout in mind, just not sure yet how to execute it.
