Day 12 Juneau
I’m still not feeling well. This morning, I took Robitussin and Tylenol for my sinus, which has helped me a bit. Today, I woke up just before 8, got ready, and went to the main dining room for breakfast. I had an omelet and a fruit salad. After that, we stopped by the International Cafe for hot tea and coffee. Leaving the ship today was easy since we didn’t have any backpacks or cameras with us.
Today, we spent the day in Juneau. First, we visited a charming gift shop and made a few purchases. I picked up some postcards, and Kel decided on a hoodie. After that, we strolled around the pier and explored the city awhile. Our next stop was the historic Red Dog Saloon. This renowned establishment has a rich history that traces back to the early 1900s and the time of the Alaska Gold Rush. Initially serving prospectors, trappers, and miners, the saloon has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. Even during Prohibition, the Red Dog Saloon operated discreetly, solidifying its reputation as a fun-seek destination. To cap off our visit, we all tried the Duck Fart shot, a multi-layered cocktail that’s made with three ingredients:
1/2 oz Kahlúa (coffee liqueur) – the base layer
1/2 oz Baileys Irish Cream – the middle layer
1/2 oz Crown Royal (Canadian whisky) – the top layer
After visiting the Red Dog Saloon, we returned to the ship. The weather was beautiful today, a welcome change from the rain we experienced during our last visit to Juneau. After dropping off our purchases in our room, we went to the Grill for lunch. I opted for some loaded french fries – not the most substantial meal, but it hit the spot. Tommy then attended a presentation while Kel and I relaxed in our room.
Tommy bought a book at the presentation and got it signed, “Race Across Alaska” by Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the Iditarod. This renowned long-distance sled dog race spans approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from Anchorage to Nome. The race commemorates the 1925 sled dog relay, during which teams of mushers and their dogs delivered life-saving diphtheria serum to Nome. I’ve just started reading the book, and it’s already quite captivating.
Kel and I enjoyed a Fire and Ice Pedicure, which was a delightful experience. The treatment involved preparing our feet, polishing our nails, and using cooling gels and heated stones to massage and smooth the skin on our calves and feet. It was truly rejuvenating, and my feet feel smooth now.
Following a pedicure, I prepared for the Captain’s Circle party, to which we were invited a few days prior. The loyalty program offers increasing benefits the longer you sail with Princess. We enjoyed a drink and listened to speakers, including the Captain. It was a pleasant evening, and we followed it with dinner in the main dining room. I indulged in escargot, salmon deviled eggs, and the Land and Sea dish, featuring a lobster tail and steak. I had the Chantilly Swan, a cream puff shaped like a swan, for dessert.
As all three of us were feeling under the weather, we decided to retire to our room for the night. Kel is already asleep while Tommy and I are unwinding and drinking the tea we ordered.
Tomorrow, we will be arriving in Ketchikan.
